Feds Prep Lawsuit Against Ticketmaster Parent Live Nation
www.thewrap.com: The Justice Department is preparing to sue Ticketmaster parent Live Nation amid continued criticism for the concert promotion and ticketing giant over exhorbitant fees, poor customer service and anticompetitive practices, The Wall Street Journal reported.
An antitrust suit could be filed as soon as next month, according to the Monday report. The specific claims the department might bring could not be learned.

From my perspective, the role of ticket platforms like Ticketmaster and Damai is crucial as they act as a bridge between production companies and audiences. However, when these platforms become too powerful, they can stifle competition and impose unfair conditions on both venues and consumers. The article correctly points out the various repercussions of such a monopoly, including poor customer service, high fees, and restrictive practices that limit venue choices for event organizers. In light of these issues, it's crucial for regulators and stakeholders to ensure that the market remains competitive and fair. As seen in China, when monopolies persist, alternatives can emerge as viable solutions, but these require significant effort and backing to be effective. Moving forward, it would be beneficial for the market if more stringent measures are taken to dismantle such monopolistic tendencies, potentially mirroring actions seen in other sectors where competition has been successfully restored. This issue is an important discussion not just for the U.S., but globally, as the dynamics between ticket platforms, production companies, and audiences are pivotal in shaping the cultural landscape.
This is kind of a callback to last year, when there were TicketMaster articles on the blog almost every week. I thought that some kind of resolution had been reached, but I guess not. Live Nation’s and Ticketmaster’s behavior in recent years had been ridiculous. Of course, it’s extremely unethical (to say the least) to use their size to force venues to use their service and extort customers with excessive fees, but it’s insane to me that on top of this they have a history of system failures and things like the Bad Bunny concert, like the article says. I think an article from last year said that Ticketmaster’s fees were sometimes greater than the base cost of the ticket. I hope that the justice department is able to do something about Ticketmaster, because it would be stupid to continue in the way they’re going. They obviously have no competition and a monopoly on the market. It’s about time something is done, anyways, since they’ve had consistent problems since 2022.
I absolutely fucking hate Ticketmaster, and it SUCKS that it is the go to website for artists to sell tickets on. I have used both Ticketmaster and it’s parent, Live Nation and I can tell you there is no difference to them at all, whatsoever. They are equally shitty websites. In November (i think) of 2023, I tried getting Taylor Swift tickets to the Eras Tour, and it was the worst experience of my entire life. In order for you to have access to buy tickets, you need to sign up for a verifies fan presale, which gives you an access code to buy tickets the day of the sale. Tickermaster gave out too many presale codes which then created issues with people getting on the websites due to the website crashing multiple time due to the amount of accounts trying to access ticket sales for multiple different show dates. It then oversold and double sold tickets/seats. Personally, I wouldn’t be upset if Ticketmaster or Live Nation gets sued. They kinda deserve it.
