Sphere Las Vegas Celebrates Earth Day

Live Design Online: Sphere Las Vegas provided the massive canvas for a special Exosphere content show in celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 20-24. The show featured work from multi-GRAMMY Award-winning Grateful Dead and Dead & Company percussionist Mickey Hart, and renowned filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg, whose artwork was combined into an 11-minute content show that will ran three times on Earth Day.

While Sphere's multimedia technology features visual and auditory capabilities, such as the work of Louie Schwartzberg, providing an unprecedented canvas that enhances storytelling and sensory experiences, it is also necessary to consider whether these enhancements can truly replace the actual authenticity of traditional Settings. The debate is often about whether technology, for all its benefits, will overshadow the kind of raw, unmediated connection that live art often fosters between performer and audience. While Sphere's technical spectacle adds a layer of immersive engagement, the question remains whether it enhances artistic expression or detract from the purity of the performance itself. But while I think the discussion is addressing these issues, it's important to acknowledge the unique contributions of places like Sphere. They not only provide artists with innovative ways to showcase their work, but also reach a wider audience through these novel platforms. However, maintaining a balance between technical enhancements and maintaining the true texture of a live performance will be essential. As we move forward, perhaps ensuring that technology acts as a complement to, rather than a substitute for, the organic elements of theatrical art will be key to maintaining the cultural and emotional integrity of live performance.

As someone who lives in Nevada and is sick of hearing about the Sphere–I have to say that the Sphere celebrating earth day is incredibly ironic because of the amount of resources to build and maintain it as well as the metric f*ck ton of unnecessary light pollution that ball of hell causes makes it one to project huge pixelated mushrooms and the earth. I think the Sphere celebrating earth day is also incredibly stupid because they spend majority of it’s time glowing big ads from the top 100 companies who are mainly to blame for climate change. That rotund digital billboard just instills subliminal consumerist messages and probably pats itself on the back for enlarging a grainy map of the earth onto it’s surface. Who knows maybe this is a turning point for the sphere to take big steps to help better the earth with its huge oversized unnecessary vat of blinking little lights that contribute to Vegas’ health/earth/wholesome contributions to society.

This was a fascinating article to read! I love Earth Day! I have a running family joke about Earth Day because when I was younger I said that Earth Day was my favorite holiday and my 2nd cousin told me that Earth Day was the Devil’s holiday and I have embraced that since! The Sphere is also so cool! I learned so much about it after taking S9, or “Sonja Spends Several Seconds Synthesizing the Sphere plus 3 more S’s” Which was a fascinating class. I learned a lot. But so genuinely, this was a really cool article. I loved looking at the videos in the article and how truly stunning the images were that they projected on the outside of the Sphere. I wish I had been there to see it because it looks like it was just simply stunning. All in all, I love Earth Day and the projections that they mapped onto the Sphere.
