Wow, Hell's Kitchen just hit Broadway and it sounds like a must-see! Alicia Keys, a legend in music, has turned her New York upbringing into a musical that's all about finding yourself in the chaos of the city. The story follows Ali, as she navigates life in NYC, trying to discover her freedom and place in the world. It’s like a love letter to New York and the tough, vibrant life there. The reviews are interesting. The New York Times is all about the incredible choreography that really brings the city to life on stage. But then, some critics like from Variety think the story drags a bit and gets a bit cliché at times, though the performances seem to save the day. TimeOut loved how the show captures the essence of New York, especially with the grand finale featuring Empire State of Mind. What really got me excited is how everyone’s talking about the new star, Maleah Joi Moon. Everyone says she's amazing, bringing something special to her character, Ali. Plus, the costumes sound super cool, throwing it back to '90s fashion.
I have to admit when I saw the title, there was a part of me that was really hoping it was a parody of Gordon Ramsay’s show. I love that man. And I could talk for a long time about kitchen nightmares. But since this show is not about Gordon Ramsay, I had to change my perspective. Well, I do not know much about Alicia Keys, and I’ll admit, I’m usually not a fan of jukebox musicals. I do wonder how much the stories based off Alicia Keys own life experiences, since I believe the music in the show, was originally inspired by real life experiences. With the main character being named Ali, I do wonder if this is telling her story. The production photos I’ve seen look vibrant and exciting, and Alicia Keys definitely has a large fan base. Best of luck to the cast and crew of this production!
