2024 Olivier Awards: The Snubs and Surprises
The New York Times: On Sunday night, the Olivier Awards — Britain’s equivalent to the Tonys — took place in London. As expected, “Sunset Boulevard” took home the most trophies (and will have a Broadway run later this year), but there were also some surprise winners. Matt Wolf and Houman Barekat, The New York Times’s London theater critics, joined the reporter Alex Marshall to discuss the winners, the snubs and the last year in British theater.

I saw Sunset Boulevard in London during my winter break, and I'm still buzzing from the experience! The minimalist design of the show was nothing short of transformative. It brought such a raw and visceral edge to the narrative, emphasizing the intense emotions and complex relationships. The use of live filming technology was another standout element, adding a layer of immediacy and intensity that you just don't see in typical productions. It made every moment feel up-close and personal, almost like you were part of the scene unfolding on stage. Honestly, I'm not at all surprised that Sunset Boulevard swept the Olivier Awards. The innovation and daring approach to such a classic piece really set it apart. Jamie Lloyd's direction was bold and thought-provoking, making a well-known story feel completely new again. Nicole Scherzinger's performance as Norma Desmond was also spectacular. She brought depth and nuance to the role in ways that left the audience captivated. It's clear why this production has been so acclaimed; it's simply perfect in its execution and impact.
