Costume Designers Guild launch pay equity movement

The Post: After the months-long actors and writers strikes in 2023, costume designers are now stepping up to end a decades-long battle for equal pay and gender equity. In early 2024, the Costume Designers Guild, or the CDG, launched Pay Equity Now, a movement focusing on achieving pay and gender equality among designers within the film and television industry.

I think this is a long time coming and I am happy to see the amount of people in the past two years that have decided to stand up for themselves for how they’ve been taken advantage of for many years. A lot of this, as the article suggests, is rooted in sexism and homophobia, as sewing and costuming has been seen as a woman’s job and a large percentage of workers are also a part of the LGBTQ+ community. As such, they have been severely underpaid and are one of the worst paying positions in film for the caliber of their work. It is tragic considering how costuming is such an integral part of the creation of film and theater that the workers are still facing consequences of closed minded thinkers. I really hope that this pay equity movement works out in their favor as it is a long time coming, and they rightfully deserve what they are owed.
