‘Between Two Knees’: Between Slaughter and Laughter
AMERICAN THEATRE: The 1491s stared at the classroom’s blank whiteboards. The Native American sketch comedy troupe had never written a play before, but here they were at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, on a co-commission from Rhiana Yazzie’s New Native Theatre, on the assumption that they had a show in them. It was 2018, and the 1491s were among the first Native artists commissioned through OSF’s American Revolutions program. They needed to come up with something.
