The AI-Generated Script From the Fake Willy Wonka Experience Is Beyond Wild

The Mary Sue: Willy’s Chocolate Experience, an AI-generated disaster that recently went down in Glasgow, Scotland, is going to dominate the news cycle for weeks. Why? Because every time we think we’ve learned the most bonkers thing about the whole fiasco, something even more wild comes out.

I had no idea that there even was such a thing as a Willy Wonka immersive experience even happening. I think it is quite interesting that this experience was created without even being a part of any Willy Wonka franchises. I also think it is quite strange that they used AI-generated images for the experience. I would have never thought of putting AI-related work with an immersive experience. I would think that that would end up looking flat and strange, like it tends to look when used in theater. I cannot even believe or even begin to understand what had occurred in order for there to be basically nothing at the experience. To think that there was basically just an empty warehouse and attendees had to call the police to force the company to give refunds is crazy. Not to mention, the fact that they chose to have AI write the script is absolutely wild. They clearly did not even look over it to make sure that it made any sense and they also did not give the actors adequate time to memorize the script.

I just read another article on this Willy Wonka experience, and this one managed to impress me and astonish me even more with just how terrible it looks. The script is impressively bad, and I would fully believe it if somebody told me this was a social experiment to show people that AI could never replace real, human, writers. That fact has never been more obvious than in this situation. There are certainly uses for AI writing, but this just is not one of them. It can't keep up with a plot like humans can, and it just will miss so many things. The entire experience seems to be a trainwreck from start to finish and while I'm glad I didn't have to pay and see it, it may have been fun to see it go down. I also have to say that I am fascinated with the character of the unknown, cause I sure don't remember them appearing in any other willy wonka movies. Just a fascinating experience overall.

So. This was a choice. Honestly I had no idea something like this existed but I don’t really keep up with things themed around Willy Wonka or AI work as well as I should. I just don’t have the time for everything else, however this article made me very sad and pretty confused as to how many thought that this was a good idea. I recognize that it was a scam but at least make the scam believable. I have so many opinions on the use of AI in anything but especially in art. Just don’t bother, it’s awful, unless it Improves into something decent that isn’t flat and weird just don’t. Additionally, AI’s can be good for brainstorming about something and getting ideas and making a quick research project easier, however it can’t actually write. AI should be employed as a tool not as the be all and end all. This article has severely disappointed me. It is absolutely ridiculous that this was actually produced. As a creator I am disgusted.

Every article that comes out of this story is better than the last. I think that one of the smallest, but funniest details to me is that in the script, the guests are supposed to say certain things. The idea that you hand a guest a script as they walk in is just so funny to me, even if I know that I probably didn't follow through on that particular part of the script. And things like Willie McDuff or Wonkidoodles just really add to the whole confusing vibe of the event. I think that part of the reason I am consuming this story with such glee is because the proponents of generative AI are so often in favor of generative AI as a way to discredit our art and the work that we do, and I think that it is really satisfying to watch the result of that idea crash and burn terrifically.

Oh the Willy Wonka experience. I’m honestly not surprised this happened and it’s been really entertaining to hear about through social media. Every time I think it couldn’t get any worse it does. I think the funniest part about all of this is that the producer thought it was good enough to put on. I don’t exactly know what he expected to happen. He has to be seriously delusional to think that people would’ve enjoyed that. Even if the script was good it was in a barely decorated warehouse. That’s not exactly immersive. Stories like this make me feel better about the state of AI. We are in no place where AI can replace human creativity. It’s entertaining that people think it can and then end up flopping as bad as this. It is quite sad to hear that the actors haven’t been paid yet but I’m also not super surprised considering the train wreck of this show. I hope it all gets sorted out for them.
