The Iron Claw Costume Designer Jennifer Starzyk on the Theatrical Quality

Below the Line: While costume designer Jennifer Starzyk may not have been familiar with wrestling prior to signing on to The Iron Claw, she has definitely developed an appreciation for the way in which the sport is choreographed and brought to life. Mimicking and embellishing the look of notable matches featured in the film was a key goal of her costuming process.

It is incredible to hear about how a designer can get so involved and into what they are working on. It is crazy to think that Jennifer Starzyk knew nothing about wrestling before going into The Iron Claw, and now she is a big fan. I think that kind of connection to something you can work on can sometimes be hard to come by and I’m so happy for Starzyk for being able to connect so heavily with wrestling. I’m not sure if I was this film’s costume designer that I would be so into wrestling. It was also quite impressive to learn about the several pairs of trunks they had to make for each character. I think that it is definitely a great privilege to be able to connect with a shorts company who were able to help them in making the trunks. Now that I’m currently working on wardrobe for Passage, I can understand how important doing laundry and taking care of the costumes is. We would save a lot of time if we were able to purchase and make several of the costumes we use.

I have no idea what this movie is. And I also have no clue about boxing. but looking at their costumes is cool. I think that boxing is an interesting sport, and would be kind of fun to try. I think one of my favorite parts about theater is being able to explore new topics and learning about things that you never would have got the opportunity to learn about before. A great example of this is how the costume designer knew nothing about boxing just like me. This reminds me of the time where I had to design a show that had heavily Gothic architecture and I knew nothing about it, but then I did lots of research and became really familiar with it. It was really nice to experience learning something new in order to create it. I also think the costumes look fabulous, and it was a little bit of a jump scare to see Zach Efron.

I have to say, at first when seeing this title I thought of Iron Fist, the MARVEL character that I’ve heard a lot about from my dad. Learning about the costume designs of The Iron Claw was super cool though! I had no idea about this show or how many ‘big’ actors are in it. The idea of making a costume that within the context of the movie is also a costume itself, for the wrestling persona, is super cool. I don’t know that much about wrestling, though my cousin wrestled in college so I wonder what he would think about this article. Also it reminded me of a discussion on the Graham Norton show where Matthew Mcconaughey and John Cena discuss Texas wrestling, and the different personas that wrestlers take on, and how one comes up with a persona. And so to think about how this costume designer had to go into the minds of these wrestlers in this biopic to embellish their costumes for the screen reminded me a lot of that.

I have never heard of this movie in my life, ever. But it seems like such an interesting movie, and the costume design, for this movie seems so personal to the designer, and again the movie itself. And as I was explaining in one of my other comments, I'm looking into declaring costume design very heavily, and this article gave me a new vision into what costume design is and what a costume designer can do. In my mind, I've always seen a costume designer as just a designer, and afterwards, it's very hands off work, but this article made me think very differently about the job of a costume designer. Which is something I was very worried about wanting to go into this field in the future.
