Review: Pittsburgh Ballet Theater's Beauty and the Beast Portrays a Timeless Tale with Pointe Precision
onstagepittsburgh.com: It’s a “tale as old as time, and a song as old as rhyme.” Beauty and the Beast is the classic tale of Belle and the Beast that many people, young and old, have become familiar with, be it through the original animated Disney film, live-action film, Broadway musical, or countless remakes.

I have been really wanting to go see this production or truly any production by Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. I was going to get tickets for Nutcracker in December but unfortunately, there was only one production I could attend due to the productions starting in late December and the fact that tickets were quite expensive. So when I saw this production I was excited to attend, but again I could not get tickets due to the short run and my workload with crew. I am a strong lover of ballet and my dream job is to be the resident stage manager for a ballet company. I have seen a few ballet productions, The Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet, Swan Lake, and Sleeping Beauty. I am guessing this production would be rather similar stylistically to the Sleeping Beauty ballet, as they take the plot of the classic story as opposed to the Disney one. I am intrigued to read more reviews. I also love seeing that there was a scenographer for this production as I think it is so important to have a cohesive set and costume design for ballet.
I love watching ballet and so wish my schedule lined up so I could see this production of Beauty and the Beast. It concerns me how much of my generation finds ballet to be antiquated and boring. I see it as the exact opposite. There’s such precision, grace, and dynamic to ballet that I’ll never not want to watch it. It does help that I trained in it for quite a bit of time and do know just how difficult it is. It’s also one of my goals to see more Pittsburgh arts performances now that I’ve settled in a bit more this semester. I saw a show at the Pittsburgh Public last week and a performance at Attack Theatre a few months ago. The lively theatre and dance culture in Pittsburgh is great! I am curious as to how the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre adapted this production. The traditional ballet is performed as the traditional darker fairytale, not the movie, and yet have seen this marketed toward family audiences. The spectacle almost always catches the kids' eyes before the darkness of the plot, but it is a consideration in the staging.
I love beauty and the beast. I did the musical in middle school and I was on the wardrobe team. And then I did it at more of a community theater and I was in the production in the dance ensemble and I had so much fun. The story is a little bit questionable, but I think that the meaning behind it is quite beautiful. I also love fairytales and magic and things of that sort so it is right up my alley. I think that is one of the most inspirational Princesses because of her personality traits. I don’t think her actions in the show are that amazing but I still like her. I am also a big fan of ballet. I started taking lessons in fourth grade, and I think it’s a really beautiful art form. Ballet and itself as a whimsical type of dance so I think compared with fairytales quite well. I follow the Pittsburgh Ballet on Instagram so I’ve seen a lot of production photos and it looks absolutely beautiful. I really hope I will be able to go see the show.
