AMERICAN THEATRE: When two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter delivered the commencement address at her alma mater, Hampton University, in May 2023, she put both of her gold statues on the podium. The students immediately cheered and jumped out of their seats as she captivated the graduating class with a simple message: If I can do it, so can you.
