Netflix Becomes a Broadway Producer With Peter Morgan’s ‘Patriots’
The New York Times: The company will pick up its first Broadway credit this spring as a producer of “Patriots,” by Peter Morgan, the creator of the hit Netflix series “The Crown.” The new play is about an oligarch who was an early supporter of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia but then fell out with him and wound up dead.

I did not realize that Netflix is one of the producers for Patriots. It will be interesting to see how this stage venture goes for them. I also did not realize that Netflix had even delved into the world of theatre, with their production in London related to Stranger Things. I wonder if the fact that I have not heard anything about the production says anything about how it is being received? Or maybe I just missed all the publicity for it? Who knows. Either way, I do plan on seeing Patriots when I’m in NY for Creator’s Expo in May. A friend and Alum of CMU School of Drama is in the production, so of course I want to go see him. From what I understand Patriots is only doing a twelve-week engagement, so there is very limited time to see it. It will definitely be different seeing a show about Putin’s Russia.
I had no idea that Netflix was involved in the making of Patriots. They seem to care about it at least for now but I don’t know how long that’ll last but hopefully it lasts indefinitely. There’s a chance they know how profitable broadway is already and don’t intend to change it at all to make it more so. But there is a good chance they don’t even care that it’s profitable and just want to grow their share of assets like Disney has been doing for ages. Overall, I am terrified to see what Netflix does to their shows over time. If they treat it the same as they’ve treated their originals then every show will be 50/50 either the worst show on broadway or actually pretty good. I really hope the trend of streaming services entering Broadway ends soon because I don’t want broadway to be run by the same people as the streaming services.
