LD Book Club: What Is Lighting Design? A Genealogy Of People And Ideas
Live Design Online: What Is Lighting Design? A Genealogy Of People And Ideas is a loving treatment of theater design through the ages; it traces the origins of modern lighting as the craft moves from the hands of “competent technicians” to those who will lay the foundation of a new approach that demands artistry beyond illumination.

It’s really exciting seeing books that actually lay out the history and stories of a craft. Obviously, we learn best from the people we’re close to, especially those in or related to our program, but these arts have changed so much in the years that it is incredible seeing that someone put in the effort to build a comprehensive, or at least, it seems to be comprehensive, story. That sort of narrative also really shows how unique and interesting the art of lighting design really is, different from many other things. The fact that the book tells stories about techniques, methods, ideas, and revolutions is really cool to see. Also, the book focuses on explaining lighting design to the reader as well, which was something I found cool. I think that having the history next to an actual explanation, or at least, a guided explanation is incredibly helpful and gives the reader a lot to think about.
