Upgraed Movie: How 2024 Camila Mendes Film Found Its Art
IndieWire: If there’s one thing that’s true about art and life: Nothing is ever really free. This goes double for art that shows up in film and TV. Each piece either needs to be created purposefully for a project by the art team or licensed from the artist or estate that holds the digital/image reproduction rights to it — unless you want a tattoo artist suing you for copyright infringement for putting an actual Mike Tyson tattoo on Ed Helms’ face.

This part of the production design process has always excited me. As someone who really enjoys art and film, I would love to someday be on a team like this that gets to specifically curate artwork for a film. I love doing art research and making design decisions to follow a story. I know that getting artwork in a film can always be a challenging process, but I never thought about what it would be like in such an art-centered film. When the film is centered around art, the art chosen has to be even more well thought out and real. Because of this, I am really glad that they hired a team of professionals for “Upgraded” to make sure that the art was authentic to the character and the current art scene. I also had no idea that they usually don’t use the actual prints of the works on set. Thinking about it now, it makes perfect sense, but it definitely adds some more obstacles in the production design process.
