Actors’ Equity Association authorizes strike against Broadway League

www.broadwaynews.com: Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) has authorized a strike against the Broadway League. AEA is the national union representing professional actors and stage managers in live theater. On Feb. 10, members of the national council of AEA voted unanimously to authorize a strike against the Broadway League (the national trade association for theater owners and operators, presenters, and general managers in commercial theater across North American cities), for work on the development agreement.

I am surprised that this is the first time that I am hearing that Actors Equity authorized a strike against the Broadway League. I think that it is very important that developing work compensates their actors and stage managers appropriately. Even though it is not an actual production that is being put on to a big audience for monetary revenue, many of these workshops and developments lead to bigger houses with many of the same team transferring and staying with the productions. Therefore, it is really beneficial for actors and stage managers to be able to work on these workshops, but they are extremely time consuming and not always realistic for those people to have jobs on top of the workshops but the workshops don’t compensate enough to allow any other option. It is an unfortunate circumstance but I’m glad it is something that is being addressed and fought for.
