2024 Oscars: Costume and Production Design lineups match for 3rd time

GoldDerby: Anyone who didn’t perfectly predict this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design has a uniquely valid excuse. This applies to all but a tiny fraction of Gold Derby’s nearly 11,000 prognosticators, whose solid consensus ultimately conflicted with the academy’s highly unusual decision to populate both categories with the same five films: “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Since these two craft races have only been completely congruent twice before, it’s especially understandable that very few people anticipated this outcome.

Before reading this article I did not actually know that there were two separate categories for costume design and costume production. That makes sense now that I think of it, I just never thought of it before. I’m also surprised that Oppenheimer was nominated for a costume design oscar. Oppenheimer is a great movie however the costumes aren’t anything special in my opinion. Maybe that means the costume designer did such a good job that I didn’t even notice the costumes, however I just think it means there’s nothing that great about the costumes. I think there were plenty of other films that deserved a costume nomination and it didn’t have to be Oppenheimer. I’m also surprised that a costume design and production nomination have only lined up 3 times in history. My own thought would be that is a costume is impressive it is also pretty hard to make.

I always look forward to watching the Oscars every year. Although I do find lots of issues with award shows sometimes, I do enjoy keeping up with them to see the popular films of the year. I usually make a list of all of the films on the nominations list when they come out and try to see as many as I can before the awards ceremony. Sometimes the list kind of pushes me to watch things that I would have otherwise not even considered seeing, and I do quite enjoy that. I also especially like paying attention to costume and production design nominees because those are the categories I am most interested in for my own career. I feel like this year really is an excellent list for production design, especially. And surprisingly, I have actually seen most of the files already. I think it is quite interesting that they are the same list of films for both categories. I feel like some of the films don’t really seem to be the best for both categories. I can see why some films would overlap, but I don’t think all of them should be considered the best for both. It makes more sense that this doesn't happen that often.

One thing I found super interesting that I learned in this article is that they used to judge costume and production design in black and white films vs color separately. I never knew that, and it made me think about the differences between the film types in terms of design, I remember when I was younger watching “I love Lucy” and I forget who told me but someone mentioned that you wore different colors then than you’d expect when it was black and white, as the color didn’t matter but the tone of gray it came up as did, so they had to experiment with wild colors, and I remember again being fascinated by the costumer’s process more recently in Wandavision when they do black and white scenes to mimic ‘old television.’ Working in monochrome versus color is a really interesting choice to make, and it’s cool to see how you can go between the two, like in Oppenheimer or the movie Belfast that came out a few years ago. I don’t always watch award shows though I try to, and I like looking at the list of nominees and winners so I can be introduced to films that I may not have known about (or ones I have heard about a lot too, and can focus on the design or other elements more thoughtfully), or designs that are super cool and hadn’t gone by my radar/I hadn’t thought about or seen yet.

While I personally do not follow the Oscars all that closely I was surprised at some of the nominees. I was also unaware that there were separate categories for costume design and costume production. I did however know that they judged those categories based on whether or not the movie was in black and white or color. I am surprised that this category has not been updated to be more modernized. Looking at the nominees this year I was very surprised as I did not think all of them were that impressive. Personally, I thought Oppenheimer had okay costumes, but they were not extravagant or anything that I said, “oh wow!” too. I can understand why Barbie was nominated for costumes because it had a lot more intricate costumes. I still did not really say “oh wow” but the costumes in the movie were very unusual and one of a kind because they were modeled after Barbie, so I would say they deserved the nomination.
