Power of One: Championing Diversity in Disneyland Entertainment Tech Services

Disney Parks Blog: From characters who take flight during theatrical shows to the background music playing in the parks, Kim Oliveras’ Entertainment, Technical and Show Services team is behind much of the magic at the Disneyland Resort. “Our team is responsible for all technical elements around entertainment, which includes lighting, audio, video production and automation,” said Kim. “All of these technical elements come together to tell the unique story behind every show or entertainment offering.”

Olivera's story is very inspirational because it is always empowering to see a woman of color take on such a large and historically male role at a company as large as Disneyland. I appreciate that she has an agenda to diversify the hiring process and I always admire people like Oliveras who work hard to get to such positions of power where they can begin to make changes that enable new generations of US minorities and discriminated groups of people to take up jobs that historically would’ve rejected them. I’ve personally always considered working at a theme park such as Disneyland if I was ever at the level to do so, but simultaneously have been very hesitant due to the company’s history of racist practices and poor treatment of employees. Hopefully with newer generations taking positions at the company such as Oliveras, Disney will begin to shift into a new era that would be a desirable name to work for.

This article is truly inspiring. I’ve always wanted to work at Disney and there are certain things in the company’s values that I look up to. But I also have the deepest respect and admiration for people like Kim, who is behind all of the magic and strive to make more magic. There is no doubt that she stumbled when first joining a team (and an industry) of predominantly White men, but the fact that she is here now says a lot about how hardworking and brilliant she is at her job. I appreciate her effort to make the working environment better, and even though what she’s doing might seem small compared to the entire industry, I believe that her impact is still far-reaching and prominent to everyone working around her. I hope that one day I can learn her skills and traits and bring positive changes to the workplace.

I really enjoyed reading this article about a woman paving the way in a leadership role in a major company like Disney Parks Entertainment. As someone who is hoping to do the same one day, Kim Oliveras is so inspiring. I know what it feels like to be working in a team where you are the only woman, and it can be really challenging overcoming some of the hurdles that come with that. I am so happy Disney is finally celebrating the women and people of color in their company, and it needs to happen more often! “‘a perfect example of making inclusion effortless. Her hiring decisions within the leadership of Tech and Show Services have given rise to one of the most diverse teams I can think of in what was traditionally a white and male-dominated area.’” This quote is so exciting and encouraging and makes me look forward to working in the industry.
