How These Fosse Dancers Have Reconstructed (And Revised) Bob Fosse’s Dancin’

Playbill: When talking about Bob Fosse choreography, people tend to list a series of images—the moves captured in photos that, if put together in a flip book, might create a Fosse dance. Teacup fingers. The tip of a bowler hat. A pelvic thrust. A side-step forward. But talk to a Bob Fosse dancer and they’ll tell you it’s so much more than that.

When I took Jazz dance classes when I was in about 5th grade, Bob Fosse’s style was extremely influential to the things I was learning. His iconic sharp movements and very interesting style of dance is something taught to a lot of dancers who end up trying the style of jazz. Luckily, I really enjoyed this style of jazz, and I kept enjoying it in class for the next few years. I also ended up doing another piece inspired by his work when I was high school, which really just shows how influential his work really was. When I was first learning about this style in 5th grade, we were given a piece for the swan lake ballet’s preshow performance. It was a restyling of one of his own previously done pieces, and although I’m unsure as to which one, I remember the dancers being casted as odette and odile, and the piece being styled that way. I really enjoyed this, and part of the process inspired me to keep dancing jazz.
