A 'Stranger Things' Prequel Play Is Headed to London's West End
Vanity Fair: Stranger Things: The First Shadow is based on an original story by Jack Thorne, Kate Trefry, and the Duffer Brothers, who created the smash hit series about supernatural events that occur in Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s. Netflix is keeping the creative team in the family with Trefry, a Stranger Things writer and co-executive producer, and Stephen Daldry, the Tony winner who also nabbed an Emmy for his work on The Crown, tapped to direct. Sonia Friedman Productions is set to produce the play alongside Netflix, with the Duffer Brothers on board as creative producers and production company 21 Laps serving as associate producer.

If I were to guess what play adaptations to expect in the coming years, a Stranger Things prequel wouldn’t have been on my list. I think it’s a little odd that they chose to make a prequel in the form of a play rather than a prequel series or spinoff on the television where all prior Stranger Things content has been. However, it’s definitely cool to see them bounce between mediums. From the article, I’m a little unclear on whether actors from the TV show will be appearing, but since it takes place twenty-ish years in the past I guess it would make sense for well-known TV characters to have different actors portraying their younger selves, so it may not be as jarring. I never caught up on Stranger Things, but I’ve seen the first season and I’m a little curious what a prequel play could possibly entail, since from my memory, all the dark secrets of the world are kind of incited by Will’s kidnapping, which is the first thing to connect the “normal” characters to the supernatural. Although I guess when it comes to prequels, I’ve seen stranger things (see what I did there?)
I’m glad this play at least has a little bit of the Duffer brother’s involvement. I think it would have gone south real quick if it was a completely independent project. The world of Stranger Things goes too deep for them to not be involved in some capacity. With that said, I don't think I ever would have guessed that they would have moved on to an on-stage version of the show, much less a prequel. I am interested to see who gets cast and what stories they decide to tell. With things like this, it is always a large risk of the cannon of the world being messed up. Something that routinely pisses off fans of big-time world-building stories. I get it, why would you put so much work in just to have to crumble when a character does something completely unjustifiable? I have faith that this production will not be that but I am still undoubtedly excited to see where this one goes.
Honestly as much as I love stranger things I don't think that this show needs to happen. I am not the biggest fan of all of the adaptations or inspired shows that are making their way to big stages in either Broadway or West end I understand that they are there because both of these places in theater are there with the main goal of making money with the theater that they produce so adaptations or Inspirations or jukebox musicals are the best ways to do so but it would be great to see original stuff in those theaters which does happen but I wish it happened more if that makes sense I guess we will see exactly how this prequel play will pan out. it also is very odd to me that the first way we're getting a prequel for stranger things is through a play that seems like a very odd choice to me but maybe it will work out if not I think it will be rather interesting to see how it gets dealt with.
