Watch Highlights From Unveiling Ceremony of Broadway's Lena Horne Theatre
Playbill: The Nederlander Organization unveiled the rechristened Lena Horne Theatre at 256 West 47th Street November 1 with a formal dedication ceremony celebrating the name change. Formerly the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, the Lena Horne is currently home to the award-winning new musical SIX. The renaming marks the first time a Broadway theatre has been named for a Black woman.

I was so thrilled to hear of the renaming of this theatre! I found out about the new name actually on instagram, following the SIX: the Musical Instagram account, and it reminded me about how nice it was that a show like SIX will be the first show housed in the newly named theatre. It’s a show that celebrates women claiming their stories back for themselves, and now Lena Horne gets to be a part of that Legacy as well as her own. I am thrilled to have learned about Lena’s contribution to theatre due to the renaming of this theatre, and hope that future renaming of theaters will continue to feature artists who deserve the additional recognition. Lena’s probable struggles are not discussed in much detail in this article however, and I may have to go do some additional research now! Her work breaking color barriers was likely very difficult and I wish some of that difficulty was credited more.
