Annie Symons (‘My Policeman’ costume designer) video interview
GoldDerby: You could say that working on “My Policeman” would be any costume designer’s dream. The movie, which had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on October 21 before debuting on Amazon Prime Video on November 4, is a romantic period drama that takes place across two timelines in 20th-century Britain and features everything from a well-attended opera performance to an excursion to sun-drenched Venice.

I really love reading about costume designers' decisions and why they make the decisions they do and the purposes behind certain things. The design decisions designers make are so important and I find it so interesting reading about. Reading about Annie Symons choices in the Policeman and how she did this project was incredibly interesting to read about. I like how she mentioned why she initially took on the project because of the personal aspect of this film. I love this movie because it felt so personal and the personal aspect was intentional. I like how she portrayed emotions throughout the film and focused on that. She portrayed the aspect of forbidden love and she really did amazing by showing that through the costumes. I also really loved the costumes through the flashbacks of the movie. I liked how in the article she mentioned that with these flashbacks she wanted to show the possibilities of the characters. I feel like she did this very well.
Custom Design is honestly such an interesting topic to read about for me. I honestly don't really understand much about it, for example what Fashions were used in which era confused me as well as what colors are used with other colors, but I still think that costuming is a really really cool thing. getting to hear from a costume designer about why they make the exact choices that they do is something that I don't think I'll ever get bored of. when hearing about these things I always think to myself “wow, I would have never thought of doing that”. and honestly even though I don't always understand exactly why they did what they did, I somehow always find myself agreeing with the costume designer in the end. Hopefully as I learn a little bit more about costume design and the future I'll be able to understand their choices and also think about how I would have made such choices myself, but as of now I think it's something that I'm just able to appreciate from afar.
