It was good of Taylor Swift to at least mention and apologize for the debacle with Ticketmaster. People all over the country were absolutely devastated that they were unable to get tickets after waiting for so long to get them. She probably made a smart decision by not naming them but she did point out that she and her team asked the company multiple times if they could handle the kind of demand that was going to come from Taylor Swift fans for this tour and she was told that they could. Ticketmaster says that they were not expecting such a high demand which seems absurd to anyone who pays attention to anything in the world. She has at least two shows in every city she’s going to, which just further proves how in demand her tickets are. Ticketmaster has had issues for a long time with demand and having people reselling tickets for much higher amounts of money.

Let’s call a spade a spade… does nobody remember when Taylor Swift took her music off of spotify because she believed people should pay to listen to her music. Ultimately this is Taylor Swift’s job and she’s trying to make money. Ticketmaster has been known for a solid decade to be really unreliable and overcharging for tickets. Taylor could have easily had her own system but then she wouldn’t be making as much money nor would there be as much conversation about her tour. This move was able to make the statement “Taylor is so big she broke ticketmaster” a valid statement and make her tour seem bigger. It’s good that Taylor acknowledged the situation on her social media but it was probably her team that helped her in order for her to not have any blow back. As much as this is ticketmaster’s fault, Taylor also has some fault behind it.

This whole Taylor Swift Ticketing debacle has been interesting to watch. I would be interested to see how ticket sales have evolved over the years since the rise in technology and social media. This is not the first time major artists have been on tour and it won’t be the last, so what made this so unprecedented in the ticketing industry? The ticketing industry needs to adapt to the current demand but it is hard to see if there is a way to do so that is not discriminatory/ableist/price hiking. The price of tickets is a big barrier for fans to see music concerts, and yes, there are plenty of people who can afford to see the concerts at the raised prices, but why should that be the norm? Why should only a certain demographic be able to attend their favorite musician’s shows? Music should be accessible to all and that includes live events.
