A casino in hectic Times Square? This theater critic says heck no.
The Washington Post: That “permanent floating crap game” that good old reliable Nathan is always trying to set up may be coming to Times Square. I’m not talking about “Guys and Dolls” — though that, coincidentally, may be in the cards, too. No, what’s actually being pitched is a casino in the heart of the theater district, a serious proposal that has deeply alarmed the Broadway establishment.

This honestly sounds like a nightmare. I hardly tolerate Times Square as it is with how packed it is with tourists and the overwhelming advertisements everywhere, do not even get me started on the creepy off brand mascots that walk around asking for money for photos. The only reason I venture to that part of town is to see the wonderful Broadway shows. The thought of having to deal with an additional casino is actually awful. The chaos that would ensue. The thing is I don’t think the vibe even fits New York at all, save the slot machines for Las Vegas. I kind of wonder if the goal is to turn Times Square into more of an East Coast Las Vegas. I also agree with the serious concerns the addition raises such as decreased safety and security along with increase of congestion. Additionally, widespread economic and operational disruption.
