Yale Insights: Ticketmaster currently controls over 70% of the market for ticketing and live events and is far and away the market leader. Strictly speaking, that does not make Ticketmaster a monopoly because it is not the only seller, but its large market share gives it a dominant position which raises concerns that it may abuse its market power.

As somebody who was scrambling to snatch up tickets And was unable to it was devastating when the Ticketmaster website crashed. Because I knew all hope is lost. I think that we need to rethink how tickets are sold for concerts nowadays because it truly has been so dominated by Ticketmaster and has made it difficult for people to actually get to go and see the artists that they love. I would agree with this article when it states that an auction system would be unfair because not everybody can afford to spend a ton of money on a ticket to go see Taylor Swift and the truth is it is really hard to regulate scalpers and people who are just buying up all these tickets with the intention to resell. I’ve always felt that that is unethical and should honestly be illegal. So perhaps the best way tickets selling for concerts should be now is every artist has their own website so that artist have more control over is able to access their tickets and there should be more regulation on people who are buying so many tickets that should be flagged as possible scalpers.
While Ticketmaster might not have a monopoly it sure does control a very large number of ticket sales for a lot of the bigger tours that happened specifically in the United States anyways. I do believe that this is negatively impacting the members of society who are wanting to get tickets to these concerts and such. I know on the internet that the week after Taylor Swift’s tickets went on sale for pre-show there were a lot of people sharing how they were in the waiting room on Ticketmaster for hours before they were told that they could not get tickets anymore. I just think it is very interesting how Ticketmaster has been so big for so long with so much business because of how much they control but their process and system is so bad still it just does not make a whole lot of sense. you would think that they would have perfected this and yet they have not it's just really interesting to see.
