Cancellation of award for playwright Caryl Churchill condemned

Caryl Churchill | The Guardian: Some of the leading names of British theatre and film have criticised the cancellation of a prestigious lifetime award to the playwright Caryl Churchill because of her support for Palestinian rights, saying the move is “nothing less than modern-day McCarthyism”.

4. This is an incredibly difficult conversation to engage with. The history surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is so deep and hurtful. I find it shocking that her award is being rescinded because I find it hard to believe that there is a clear right and wrong here. Every time I read about Israel and Palestine, I can only be angry at the events that created such tension between these two groups which, as far as I can tell, wasn’t really wrought by either of them but rather by antisemitism globally and the Superpowers of the UN’s inability to handle the fallout of WWII. I do, however, think it is entirely different for an award to be rescinded because of a directly anti-semitic play from 2009. I have not read Seven Jewish Children, I agree that work that is hateful should not be awarded. It just does not appear that this play is why the award is being rescinded, but rather it is because of Churchill’s support of Palestinian refugees. There has to be something more to her support (maybe the way it is worded or the actions of groups she is donating to?) that is antisemetic.
