Mark Scruton (Wednesday) production design interview

GoldDerby: Netflix’s “Wednesday” is set in Vermont, but the show did not shoot there. After scouting locations in Toronto, the supernatural series based on the “Addams Family” character, ultimately filmed halfway around the world in Romania, where production designer Mark Scruton found a castle that caught the eye of executive producer and director Tim Burton.

Woah I did not realize that this was a show (I’ve been too busy working on shows and thesis work) but I am really intrigued about it now. It caught my eye because Vermont and The Addams Family are two things that are close to my heart. I think that this is a really unique story because we don’t get this happening in theatre where we need to scout locations. It’s always interesting to hear where things actually get filmed vs where they are set because the two locations are often not the same or even close. However, this article also makes me wonder how much money it takes for these creative teams to do all this travel and scouting of locations. Is it factored into the budget? If a show is on a smaller budget, do they not get afforded the chance to travel to scout for locations? These are the many questions I have about this but I really am just excited to see the show now that I know about it.

This is a really interesting read. I love burton’s style and am exited to see this show. The talk of design being built around a specific castle tower shows how one thing can spark and create a bonfire of imagination. I really enjoyed reading the bit about the contrast of Wednsday’s room. I’ve been in dorms that have that clear divide and I love that aspect of being with a random roommate is brought into the show. The technical aspecs for Thing is really cool. I like that they are using previous design knowledge from things like the mupputs to inform how they created this set. Using previous works to build new works is interesting as it provides perspective and opportunity to improve an art form instead of just reinventing the wheel. I will be very interested to watch the show and see how the set reads. This show has been on my watchlist since the first commercial came out.
