Still no return of Ice Castles in Colorado for 2022-23 winter

Arts & Entertainment | gazette.com: To take shape, Ice Castles depend on water, temperature, parking, traffic flow and, Smuzynski said, a big enough space "close enough to a lake or a river or a creek or some type of natural water source that creates good drainage for the water to go back to the natural environment for once we begin to melt."

This is very sad to see. This event looks very special and beautiful. One of the only good things to come out of Covid was the numerous new and unique outdoor events like this one even though this one hasn’t happened in a while. I attended an outdoor walk-through light show Christmas event that took place at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and it was totally amazing. It was multiple exhibits all designed by local lighting designers. Each exhibit was completely different, ranging from a field of pixel mapped balls, light up trees, projections, etc. So many new things like this have popped up. It was a great, safe, way to get out and see art and continue supporting local artists. Since everything was shut down, it was pretty inspiring to see how artists adapted to still be able to create work and give people unique experiences. I hope this Colorado event is back soon.

This is so sad to see. I have never heard of these ice castles before, but by their title, what they are is pretty self-evident. I would absolutely love to go to one of these in person. It is such a shame that there are so many factors influencing the ability of these to be built. One factor that may not be the issue this year, but certainly will be in the future – climate change. The Earth continues to grow warmer, year after year, and this may just be the death of this event. At least in Colorado at first. But, as global temperatures continue to rise, this may inhibit ice castles from areas even further north. Climate crisis aside, I hope that one day all the boxes are able to be ticked and they are able to construct and ice castle once again, because I would certainly love to be able to experience one in person. Till then, I will live the experience vicariously through the one and only image provided in this article.
