Bruce Norris On The Moral Complexities of ‘Downstate’

Observer: When Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park won a Tony in 2012, he became the first playwright to achieve the hat trick of winning the Tony Award for best play, the Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Olivier Award for best new play. It may have come as a surprise to him, though. Norris assiduously avoids reading reviews.

I think that it is interesting to read about why a playwright wrote one of their plays and what experiences and ideas they are drawing from to influence their piece. This one is particularly interesting because of the subject matter of the play. That along with the fact that this playwright is the first to win the Tony Award for best play, the Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Olivier Award for best new play is intriguing as well. It seems as though Bruce Norris has at least a little bit of personal experience or near personal experience with the subject matter that the show revolves around so it is interesting to hear what he has to say about it. It is also pretty interesting to hear that he apparently does not read reviews about his shows, which I guess is a good thing to do for some people.
