Technology looms large in 'The Orchard' and 'Theater for One'

WBUR News: Technology such as Google Meet and Zoom have connected us for years. At the height of the pandemic, people everywhere relied more heavily on these tools and more to work, meet up with friends, take classes and even watch theater. Two plays, "Theatre for One: We Are Here (Nairobi Edition)" and "The Orchard" — also showing virtually simultaneously — use technological platforms to connect the audience with the performer and push showgoers in some instances to move from passive voyeur to participant.

The robotic arm sounds so cool to see it unfold on stage like that. Even just the photos from the article make me think this must’ve been breathtaking. The incorporation of technology is a theme in these recent articles and makes me think how one day the course for DPs could change as a result to incorporate more digital technology elements to theatre. The pandemic did force us to become one with the existence of technology using zoom as the boy points out to function as people. I like the idea of “The Orchard” being this futuristic as its fun to see premises set in older times brought back with huge spins such as futuristic robotics. I wonder how different the process is for actors in learning how to navigate a stage where so much of it is either digital or an advanced machine.
