Meow Wolf's Costume Designer Kate Major Talks Her Denver Fashion Week Collection MEOW WOLF
303magazine.com: Meow Wolf is showcasing their first ever collection at Denver Fashion Week (DFW) on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and costume designer Kate Major is the face of it. Themed TRASH, Major took inspiration from the trash planet in Meow Wolf’s exhibit Convergence Station.

I’m a huge fan of Meow Wolf and their work, so I was very excited to read this article. I really look up to Kate Major and her creations. Her wild, imaginative, avant garde style is something I feel is akin to my own design style. Creating art out of trash is one of my favorite art movements because it places such a huge emphasis on not only sustainability, but also resourcefulness and imagination. To look at trash and see how you can make it into something shocking and beautiful is such a talent. I would be absolutely ecstatic to be able to design for a company like Meow Wolf in the future. She said that “If people see anything that I make and go ‘wow that’s wild,’ I feel like I’ve really done my job” and I really couldn’t agree more with my own art. I want people to think about my art even after they’ve left the exhibit.
I have read a couple articles about MeowWolf and I have had a lot of friends tell me that it is something I have to experience. I think there is something very unique about the experience and from what I am hearing, the different locations allow people of all ages to embrace their curiosity and explore. I think it is something that we can lose as we grow up, so it is nice to see that creativity alive and embraced. I had no clue that there are elements of costumes and characters. I love the focus on sustainability and making things out of found objects or trash. The clothing industry produces so much waste that it is important to show what can come from using your imagination rather than wallet. I also am a big fan of her goal to make people say “wow that is wild,” I think that outlook produces fun garments that are not afraid to push boundaries.
I love some of these designs. I had only lightly heard of Meow Wolfe prior to this article and didn't really have a good idea as to what it was, but now after reading about some of the designs that are exhibited there I am very interested to go see it. I love that Kate Major uses so may up cycled materials in her designs. I think that recycling and using second hand materials can not only be an incredibly sustainable way to make art and costumes but, it can also lead to some amazing designs. If you are only using what you have at your fingertips you have to get creative as to what you can make out of it. Some of her designs are so obviously reused materials in a good way. It opens the conversation as to why more places don't do this already. And I defining looked at some of the photos of her work and went "wow that is wild", so a great success.
This is my first time hearing of Meow Wolf and their Costume Designer Kate Major and I cannot believe I haven't heard of them and their work! I am extremely glad that I came across this article because I got to experience the work of both Meow Wolf (after conducting more research) and Kate Major. I believe their work does a great job in depicting that art is all around us and how you do not need to possess fancy materials to create exceptional work that makes people go wow! Using recycled materials is also a great way to encourage more artist to utilize more second-hand materials, or objects around them to create. Major depicts that you don't need a large sum of money to express your art. Which is what I feel like many artist fall into this notion and can sometimes be overly distracted by the money aspect of their work rather than the work itself. So, this collection was definitely a necessity for the fashion scene and a great display of a variety of work.
