‘It’s relatable’ … The Crown’s Emma Corrin on playing gender-swapping, time-travelling Orlando
Theatre | The Guardian: Emma Corrin wasn’t yet born when Tilda Swinton took to the screen as Orlando in Sally Potter’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel, with a look that would create a whole new aesthetic for gender fluidity. So it’s no little deal for the 26-year-old actor that, even before they step out on to the stage in the role, comparisons are already being made.

It is inspiring to see a positive representation of queer and gender-fluid characters on stage. The diversity and representation of the LGBTQ+ community in theatre, is one that has been fought for for many years. Surprisingly, LGBTQ+ rights have not always been accustomed on stage and off in the theatre or film industry. But now, with actors and actresses alike pushing the way forward to tell stories that highlight the journey of queerness and how to become one’s true self. Having seen Emma Corrin in the crown, I am interested to see them in their other works, especially Orlando, but I know my mind would be blown away. To tell the story of finding your true self in many different ways, we help to bridge the gap between our worlds, allowing us to start a conversation about the wrongdoings of our society.
