Alec Baldwin Sues ‘Rust’ Armorer and Crew for Giving Him a Loaded Gun

Right now, I am in my props rotation for stagecraft and it is interesting to learn about how to handle prop weapons correctly. I learned today that even if something is dulled down or being used in a protective manner, it still could be unsafe. Todd told us about a time when a sword which was dulled ended up cutting an actor and then needed 14 stitches. Whenever you are dealing with prop weapons there is always a concern for someone to get hurt, especially when it’s low budget, bad communication and other factors come into play. Just like with Rust many of the qualifications and also safety procedures and precautions were overlooked due to the low budget and a lack of communication between crew members. It is still heartbreaking to hear that someone lost their life because of it. I believe that while finding the blame is good, there should also be in place a new set of regulations that prevent this type of thing from happening again, because it is often all too common, especially on film sets.

I've been following this incident and all these cases for a while now and there is no doubt that this situation is incredibly complicated. I have been struggling to understand why there were real bullets anywhere near the set to begin with. I also can't help to feel that Alec Baldwin's case is just a little petty. Obviously the courts will decide the validity of his claims however throwing so many people under for the mistake leads to me to think that it was a procedural oversight or there was no time to even allow procedures to happen. I think as a producer Alec Baldwin has some fault behind the incident. Previous reports have come out that the set was overworked and rushed constantly because of the producer. While Alec Baldwin didn't directly hire the people involved with the incident he is still providing financial means for the movie to happen and his face is heavily tied with the production meaning he has some sort of responsibility over the people on set.
