NBC Commits $500,000 to Support High School Theater Programs with Launch of R.I.S.E. AMERICA

www.broadwayworld.com: Inspired by the network's upcoming Jason Katims drama RISE, which premieres Tuesday, March 13 and follows the effects a high school theatre department has on its surrounding community, NBC is launching R.I.S.E. America, a program that grants a half-million dollars to high school theatre programs across the country.

This series has an interesting concept because it looks at how theatre affects high schoolers. This is something that has been studied in the past yet I don’t think mainstream popular culture has fully embraced this idea. I think the theatre community knows how impactful theatre was in high school but a lot the big decision makers don’t. I hope this show fulfills its mission and introduces families who have never set foot in a theatre to the power of high school theatre. I appreciate NBC’s philanthropic move to give away ten thousand dollar grants to schools to improve fifty high school theatres. Hopefully, this helps high school theatres whose funding has been severed by budget cuts. I think shows work the same combination that “Rise” creates a successful model for television to be more than something that is just watched. It takes an issue and creates a solution. This model will hopefully be continued by other television series, if not by giving five hundred thousand dollars worth of grants away but by leaving viewers with places donate to.
