Recording Academy President Clarifies His 'Women Need to Step Up' Grammys Comment

jezebel.com: On Monday Neil Portnow, Recording Academy president and CEO, told press that women artists who wanted to be engineers, producers, musicians, needed to “step up” because they’d be more than welcome. He said this after a particularly dismal Grammy awards in which only one woman, Alessia Cara, took home an award for her work alone.

Oh my god is all I can say about the President of the recording academy. Saying “women artists who wanted to be engineers, producers, musicians, needed to “step up” because they’d be more than welcome.” That’s like saying women need to apply more in order for there to be more female CEOs or asking racial minorities to work on getting themselves hired. This is something completely out of all these minorities’ control. Also, women n the industry are doing very well for themselves and producing amazing music. I am blown away how someone of such power can make such an idiotic statement. When Portnow even considers that the lack of female representation in certain categories is the fault of women, he loses all credibility in his clarification. Lack of representation is never the fault of the oppressed minority. I disagree with the author of the article when she says that this is even a first step in the right direction. Portnow is clearly trying to make sure that he is still in a good light. He doesn’t seem to care about his clarification. He doesn’t even apologize! He says he regrets his actions but never says he is sorry. I am just speechless.

I think it is ridiculous firstly that the Recording Academy president and CEO had the gaul to tell women to step up and put themselves forth more because “they’d be more welcome”. This is so naive for him to think that women have been the ones not trying enough and that people, men, are so accepting of women taking bigger more important roles in any industry. Women have been struggling for so long to gain equal rights and work alongside men with the same respect that men can give each other. Though Neil Portnow tried to correct himself on Variety it doesn’t change the fact that the first thing he had to say was that women are the ones lacking in effort and then has to go back to edit his opinions. I believe that if Portnow truly believed that women were just as capable of creating good music and were working hard to be on the same level as men then he wouldn’t have said “step up” in the first place.
