Stage review: City Theatre's powerful 'Leonard Pelkey' becomes a story felt, not just told

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Inevitably, right from the start, it’s all about the performance. Yes, there’s a story, but that seems mainly the pro-forma framework on which to erect the one-man performance through which Keith Randolph Smith plays Detective Chuck Desantis, who tells the story and portrays all the characters in it.

That’s our focus: the actor at work, and good, solid work it is.

This review is surprisingly positive for the number of aspects that the Rawson disliked. For example, the author states that he did not like the title, the lighting, and most importantly, the found the only character uninteresting. I wonder if the writer liked the show because it highlighted the actors diversity, as opposed to being a good production by itself. If that is the case, it’s wonderful that Mr. Smith is a diverse actor, but is that good enough basis for a positive review. The other alternative that I could think of is that the end is so strong, that it overrides the feelings towards the beginning of the piece. People almost always judge something by the end of the it, rather than the process because its closer to their memory. In addition, Rawson states that the story worth telling but is there a better medium for it than the one person show it is. Since I have not seen the show, I don’t know but I would like to read another review, by a critic who had not been so familiar with the actor, to get a better picture of what the show was and what is could be.
