Exploring Deflection

www.flyhouse.com/blog: Simply put, deflection is when something bends. In this video, Flyhouse explores the elastic range, plastic range, and yield point of different pipes used for rigging to see what impact a pull test has on them.

I always love the Chicago fly house videos. They don't just tell you, they show you. This one was no exception. It started with a brief description and then went into testing. I was really impressed by the lines they had on the screen to show the deflection and how the pipe changed with different pull weights. We didn't talk much in structures about what deflection means. We talked about how much you want, and how to limit it, but the video talks about how deflection to a plastic state is a warning sign for failure. I think that they may have wanted to explain this more though. I would have loved to hear about how much plastic deflection is OK. I am glad they made the differentiation between steel and aluminum. Your standard theater probably doesn't do much with aluminum, but they may have truss that is made with it so that is important to be aware of.
