Grammy President ‘Regrets’ Telling Women in Music to Step Up
www.vulture.com: Recording Academy chief Neil Portnow has clarified his controversial statement about the Grammy’s decades-long failure to acknowledge and award female musicians. When asked about it after Sunday night’s show, Portnow told a reporter that “[women need] to step up because I think they would be welcome,” a statement that incited ire from musicians and fans alike.

I think this is an interesting situation because I want to believe that Neil Portnow means well and just slipped up, because that can happen. However, I am still confused about the full statement made on Sunday because to me the first part contradicts the second part. From his clarifying statement, I can’t tell if he genuinely realizes his mistake or if he is just trying to save his own skin. Even though I read the full statement, anyway you put it it doesn’t sound good, but taken out of context it sounds atrocious so I wonder if this is a situation where the media took a sound bite and ran with it. I find it very hard to tell what he actually meant and what the media simply implied. I think he slipped up, and what he said was not okay, but also we live in a culture that takes soundbites and uses them as headlines without explaining the full story.
