Art Talk with Woolly Mammoth Artistic Director Howard Shalwitz

NEA: In 1978, Howard Shalwitz came to Washington with his acting buddy Roger Brady to co-found Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, which they envisioned would advance the art form through innovation, provocation, and a healthy embrace of artistic risk. The company’s first home was a rented church hall, and its dream budget was $200,000. Today, Woolly Mammoth is frequent NEA grantee and a Washington fixture, one that has received 45 Helen Hayes Awards and built a 265-seat theater of its own—all while continuing to push the boundaries of what theater can be.

I totally agree with Shalwitz, that the theatres in DC are so intriguing because of their character. Many of the productions at DC theatres would seem out of place performed at any other theatre. And that is most of the reason I love going to see theatre in DC and am excited to apply for internships in the DC area. I was trying to find an internship at either the Folger Shakespeare Library Theatre or at The Shakespeare Company because I really enjoy how both theatres take Shakespeare's work and make it new and different for every iteration of production. Unfortunately, both theatres' internships are focused more on Shakespeare era education and archival research than production. I am excited to apply for internships at all of the unique theatres in DC this summer (ex. the iconic Arena Stage, as Shalwitz mentioned, as well as the Ford's Theatre and Studio Theatre).
