Opening Doors with Broadway Producer Greg Nobile

OnStage Blog: Tony-winner Greg Nobile has produced shows on Broadway like “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder ,” the revival of “Sideshow” and the current, site-specific “Sweeney Todd” at the Barrow Street Theater. He has invested in musicals like “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Fun Home” and “Spongebob Squarepants .” He has produced multiple shows in the West End, including the Imelda Staunton-lead revival of “Gypsy,” and the film “India’s Daughter.” He is the managing director of Legacy Theatre , a fledgling company on the shoreline of Connecticut, and runs Flying Horse Hospitality, a group that recently opened their first restaurant and are already working on their second. Did I mention that Greg is 25 years old?

Just from reading the introduction of the article when it says “Did I mention that Greg is 25 years old?”, I became a little skeptical of Greg Nobile and his success. This is very young and I’m not saying he isn’t talented but this fact made me wonder whom he knows that got him these jobs. After hearing the story of how Nobile dropped out of college and how his dad was an entrepreneur, it makes sense as he has a had a lot more time in the industry compared to college graduates and experience from his father. Jana also seems like his into the industry and acting as the more experienced and trusted producer for Seaview productions, making his success for his age a little less of surprise. Most interesting about this article is how he commercializes the show business. This might also account for his great success. A lot of time theatre is produced because of the art and the money is sometimes thought of later but Nobile does the opposite. I don’t want to think of this as bad because producing art that recoups an investment is smart but Nobile seems to be doing this for money rather than the joy of art.

Reading this article was very inspiring for me. The past couple years ive gotten more and more interested in become a producer for commercial theatre in New York. When reading articles about producers though it is always people who are at least 50 years and theatre has changed so much since then. Reading about someone who is young is truly inspiring. I went to their website and there mission statement is very interesting. I wonder what would have happened if he did not attend the opening night of that Broadway show. Its interesting to know how much money he invested in these shows and how much money he has recouped from these shows. I think I want to reach out to him and ask him more about his life since this is the path I want to take for my career. He also invested in spongebob which is always a highlight for me.
