This recap of all of the Women's Marches from this past weekend was really wonderful! Attending the Pittsburgh Women's March with a group of friends and classmates just yesterday made my heart especially full, and I am very happy to see that that was the case not only across the entire country, but really across the whole world as well. At the Pittsburgh march in particular, I was so glad to get to hear speakers from and that are running for public office here in Pennsylvania because it allowed me to learn more about the politics of a new state. In other parts of the country, I am glad to see that powerful people in the entertainment industry in particular were able to share more personal messages. Halsey's poem on her own experience with sexual assault was especially enlightening and beautiful, and I am so happy to see people making art for protest in a very public way.
Similar to Anabel, it is so nice to actually see a recap of all the Women’s Marches and see the support everyone was giving to the march and women’s rights. Last year, I was unable to go to any of the Women’s March due to family conflict, but this year I was able to go to the one in Pittsburgh with a large group of my friends and fellow classmates. It was so nice to be able to see everyone united and standing together for what we believe in, which I feel like is further emphasized in all the speeches given across the nation. Halsey’s poem particularly stood out to me as being so impactful and incredible, because through discussing her own sexual assault she was able to show that even though we, as women, all come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, races, sexualities, ages, and parts of the United States we all have faced the same thing. I hope that things like this will truly help us move forward and make more progress in regards to women’s rights and equality.
As someone who attended the Pittsburgh Women’s March, it makes me really happy to see this cause both from the local and national scale. I had never been to a rally before this, but I found the experience very education really interesting to see the ground level of Pittsburgh politics. Now more than ever, I think it’s really important to vote and show up to rallies. While I think celebrities weighing in on political and social issues can be dicey, I appreciate the impact that they can have, when done well. I stumbled on Halsey's speech on facebook and I found it extremely moving and disturbing. Speeches like hers going viral is a great way to bring awareness to the cause and can have a powerful impact. Names like Viola Davis and Natalie Portman mean something to people, and I think it’s great when people use their fame and wealth for a good cause.
I am so glad I could attend the women’s march this year. Last year I was in rehearsal during my high school's tech week (of course) so I had to miss it. But coming to the march this year was very fulfilling. To see all the people who share the beliefs that I do, to be amongst new friends who share the beliefs I do, to be in a crowd with people who took time out of their day to make signs, hats, and to stand together, it made me feel way more emotional than I thought it would. The phrases on the signs were clever, heartfelt, to the point and everything in between. I am really glad that celebrities are speaking up and out because, as much as we would not like to admit it, celebrities really run America (I guess literally now, too). They have more of an impact on the masses than we consciously realize. They need to use their platforms for good, and stay true to the causes they say they care about.
