Shining a Spotlight on Mature Female Artists

Theatre Development Fund – TDF: When the leaders of Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts were planning their multidisciplinary Winter Festival at New York Live Arts, their first priority was simple. "We wanted to do a season of women," says artistic adviser Dan Hurlin, adding that a second guideline soon emerged. "We started talking about people who haven't been seen in New York in a long time."

I love that, when Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts began their Winter Festival began to establish their priorities, they began with wanting a season of women. I think that making that the number one, main priority is something that is rarely done. I think that another reason I have a lot of respect of Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts is because they hold an definition of feminism that does not exclusively represent white, young women, it is inclusive. They embrace the power and impact that women have in all stages of their life and from all walks of life. I have a wild amount of respect for these women because, despite the fact that our society seems to have this age limit on self-expression, they have not only continued their work, but they are flourishing as vital members of the arts community. I think that the poem included in the program is a beautiful contribution that really succinctly encompasses the beauty and the massive impact that this event has the capacity to have.
