Variety: Matt Damon apologized for his controversial remarks regarding the #MeToo movement and recent sexual misconduct revelations on the “Today” show Tuesday morning.
While discussing Damon’s upcoming Super Bowl ad, Kathie Lee Gifford asked the “Downsizing” actor about the backlash he received over comments made on ABC News’ “Popcorn With Peter Travers,” where he said sexual misconduct should be judged on a “spectrum of behavior.” “I really wish I’d listened a lot more before I weighed in on this,” Damon told Gifford.

This story demonstrates how complicated of an issue this watershed moment on sexual assault is. This also shows the need to have a conversation about these issues, which affect so many different people in so many different ways. Sexual assault is an incredibly important issue that we need to thoroughly excise from our society. Damon’s comments seemed to be aimed at recognizing that there is a spectrum of sexual misconduct, and that every single incident should not necessary be viewed in the same vein as Bill Cosby or Harvey Weinstein whose actions constituted a criminal pattern of behavior over decades, as opposed to an isolated incident. However, well intentioned Damon was it is clear that his comments have done more harm than good, as it seems that some have taken his comments as him shifting the blame away from the accused, and implying that not all of the behavior is bad. That was not his intention, but it was wrong for him to say it given the incredible national conversation we are having regarding sexual assault. It was right of him to apologize.
