Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council hosts Victorian dress class
www.ktalnews.com: “So I’m gonna teach students and a few of my friends how to sew Victorian costumes.” says Darlene Taylor, a local artist and the class’s instructor, “We’re gonna be doing a top waist and also a underskirt and over skirt.”

Victorian costumes are so cool! They are so complicated to sew thought, so it’s really cool that they are making it a class open to the public. What’s especially fascinating to me about the Victorian fashions were the hats. They had so many different kinds! I find the evolution of hats/headwear throughout history fascinating. Something that originated as purely a remedy for cold turned to fashion, and through history has often been used as a marker of social class and wealth. Beyond that, I just find hats cool. It’s sad to me that modern fashion has hats going by the wayside, and all you really see is baseball caps and beanies for cold weather. Cloche hats, flat caps, bowler hats have all disappeared, and even full-brimmed hats have mostly gone away except for tourists. I would love to take a Victorian hats class and learn more about the hats of the past!
First, I love this. Not only does it allow people more opportunities to learn how to sew, but also allows more people opportunities to learn about historical clothing!! because every time I learn something new about historical clothing, I learn something new about historical people. Secondly, I love how the teacher of this class says she wears Victorian clothing in her day-to-day life. It actually reminds me of a theory I have whereas we rediscover past historical clothing, and we see more and more people deciding to live in those clothes, I think trends in modern clothing are going to change. We are already kind of seeing a return of type of corsets/stays which I have a personal theory about unrelated. But more and more even in the modern stylings, you'll see people whose aesthetics are very 70s, or very 50s, etc., and while most of the aesthetic stylings are related to within the last century, we are starting to see some people who choose to live their daily life in aesthetics/styles that reach back further. And so my theory is that as we become more and more accustomed to this, instead of modern fashion types, being more color based, think emo being dark, Academia being browns, etc. I think we are going to see these groupings turn into timelines. Instead of just 70s vibes, maybe it's Victorian vibes. I think the world is gonna get used to attire from every century and decade. I don't know how long it's gonna take though. Fast, fashion, creating unsustainable clothing, I think people are turning their heads back to see what used to work and why. Personally, I hope more people do so, and not just the people who like to sew in their living room.
