Blade Runner 2049 Lawsuit Against Musk, Tesla: Do Producers Have Case?

variety.com: Alcon Entertainment, producers of “Blade Runner 2049,” have accused Elon Musk and Tesla of infringing its copyrights — alleging the tech mogul blatantly copied an iconic scene from the movie with an AI-generated image intended to promote Tesla’s new self-driving taxi, after Alcon refused to grant any rights related to the 2017 sci-fi pic.

I think stories like these are going to be more frequent as AI continues to grow in the arts industry. While I believe that every artist should have the right to fight for their artwork, especially when it looks very similar to the original artwork made, I wonder if the courts will see this in the same way. I also wonder that if anything changes, and Alcon and Warner Bros reach a settlement, will Musk and Tesla have learned anything, or are they more likely to continue forward with their same actions on someone who may be less fortunate and unable to defend themselves like Alcon. With AI continuing to increase in our industry, how are we going to prevent people like Musk from taking work that was created by us and using it as their own, or using AI to create a different version of the thing we created? I hope that for the sake of the Blade Runner franchise and all artists in the film and tv industry, something is done about this suspiciously identical-looking picture of one of the most iconic shots in Blade Runner 2049.
