‘& Juliet’s’ Charts New Course for Bard and Jukebox Musicals
onStage Pittsburgh: Corey Mach was on a balcony in Charlotte, N.C., last week, looking out at a cloudless sky and talking about coming to Pittsburgh as William Shakespeare in the hit musical & Juliet.
Mach is on tour with the show that boasts nine Tony Award nominations, songs by prolific hitmaker Max Martin, and a new twist on Romeo and Juliet. This version of the tragic love story takes off from an intervention by The Bard’s wife, Ann Hathaway, setting up a less tragic course for Juliet.

As said in a news comment a few months ago, I am not the biggest fan of this show. I think the overall production is great; however, the storyline just seems so Glee esk in a not great way. However, I think this article about Romeo and Juliet gives a fun look at how the show puts a new twist on Romeo and Juliet. I saw the Romeo & Juliet adaptation at the circle in the square over fall break, and while very campy, I much rather watch that type of Shakespeare. It’s also interesting that Max Martin, the songwriter, prefers to stay out of the spotlight and let his work speak for itself. I found that so interesting because Max Martin produces for some major people like Taylor Swift. The article makes the show sound really exciting, especially with the mix of comedy, pop songs, and audience interaction. I think it’s great that the cast is raising money for hurricane relief while touring too. While my opinion on the show differs every now and then, I think if you have the money, it's a good show to see for fun! Nothing groundbreaking, but definitely a good time.
