SP brings precision to the stage on Starlight Express

LightSoundJournal.com: Starlight Express, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘fastest show on earth’, has enjoyed a much-anticipated comeback at the Wembley Troubadour Theatre. The concept for the return of one of theatre land’s best-loved productions was to create an immersive visual experience, where performers race around on roller skates across multiple levels to produce a high-octane entertainment spectacle.

This technology is so cool and is something that isn’t often used in traditional theater. With a show like this one that already pushes the boundaries of what theater looks like and what can happen on a stage or in a theater space, bringing in more advanced technologies, even if they aren’t typical for theater, makes a lot of sense. When we are faced with problems or challenges, we have to adapt and learn to deal with them and that’s exactly what this team did. I have seen so many videos of this show all over social media but it never really occurred to me just how fast the actors were moving and all the challenges that this would present. It’s no wonder that normal spotlights and cameras can’t adequately track the actors at this speed and this type of technology would need to be used. I wonder if this technology will eventually make its way into more traditional theater and make things more automated.
