Olivia Rodrigo Falls Through Hole in Stage in Melbourne
www.billboard.com: In a video circulating TikTok from one of the “Drivers License” singer’s show at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, Rodrigo is seen hyping up the crowd by running across the stage. However, there was an opening in the stage she didn’t see and she fell right through, grabbing the ledge and then ultimately pulling herself back up

I’m really glad this was just a silly little hiccup and didn’t cause any lasting injuries or anything. Obviously sometimes performers just don’t look where they’re going, but they have so many things to focus on––it clearly falls to stage crew to make sure that the stage is safe and any issues like a giant hole in the stage are extremely apparent. From the fact that this happened at all, I’d assume she was not warned about any holes in the stage, because then she probably would’ve been more careful in running across. Tours like this move really quickly so it’s probably hard to stay on top of all these venue-specific details, but I’m pretty surprised that having a gaping hole in the middle of the stage didn’t seem to raise any red flags earlier. Of course, the Internet existing has also spread this like wildfire, so I hope Olivia Rodrigo isn’t too embarrassed as it’s totally not her fault and she recovered well.
This situation is simultaneously so scary and also ridiculously funny. This could have easily been much worse but luckily she was not hurt after falling through the hole. I’m glad she was able to pull herself back up and continue on with the performance and that now we can all just laugh about it but it also brings up questions about how something like this could've happened. It seems that there are so many rules and safety procedures nowadays when it comes to live entertainment so something like this should be impossible. Despite this, every so often something (or someone) falls through the cracks. I hope that this is something that was not a repeated issue with this tour or at least was learned from and will be avoided in the future. This just goes to show how vital safety checks are before shows and how on top of things crew members have to be in order to ensure everything goes smoothly.
I saw this clip multiple times and clicked on the article hoping it explained why the hole was there and if anyone got a strong talking to. I think talent puts a lot of trust in the crew who builds and runs their shows because often they rely on patterns and trust to do their performances without holes in the floor. It makes me think of actors who fearlessly hop onto scenery, throw props around rough, and run to their spikes to hit certain cues and there’s a silent symbiotic relationship between their confidence in action and the quality of services provided for a production. I really want to know why the hole was open when it was. Thankfully she didn’t get hurt and the amicable way she handled it made her an even more likable celebrity. I wonder if whoever’s fault it was got in trouble or fired because that fall could have been pretty serious.
When I first saw this video circling around social media I was thankful that she was ok. Something like that could’ve gone so much worse than it had been. But I was wondering, if this tour had been on tour for 8 months by this point, wouldn’t she have remembered that there was a hole in the stage? I can see how when you’re caught up in the moment you can forget certain details but this feels like something the production team would’ve wanted everyone to be aware of at all times. However, she handled it like a pro and I’m sure the production team had an emergency plan in case something like this happened and she had gotten hurt. Tours are hugely complicated to begin with and often have many eye-catching moments where the artist is flying in the air or doing other cool tricks with the scenery. I hope that the rest of her arena tours go well and I can’t wait to see the tour’s film on Netflix at the end of this month.
While this is funny to watch, it is very scary. Watching the video, it seems if she had been a few inches to the left or right, or if her hands had been in a different position, she could have been very seriously injured. Honestly, I am shocked at how this could even happen. Did a motor or electrical component fail? Did a crew member forget to close it? The fact that after a big fall, which can be disorienting, she was able to get up and continue performing was a true testament to her professionalism and training as a performer. Even so, I hope that she got checked out after and that her team works to prevent this from ever happening again. In a concert world where lifts are so popular, this is a reminder to all technicians and their teams to regularly check and service components– as well as to monitor them all live during the show.
As soon as this happened, it was all over my feeds and I was shocked to see this had happened. As someone who is looking into joining the commercial entertainment sector, this is something that makes me nervous about going into it. As a fairly anxious person, I think this is one of my main reasons for not wanting to be something like a controls integrator at TAIT. I think the coding of the large shows would be so much fun, but I would be horrified knowing that accidents like this can happen based on whatever I decided to do with the system. I am interested in seeing whether or not the lift was planned to go down and she forgot about it in the moment, or if it was a problem on the controls side where the lift was not supposed to be down then. I was glad to see she was oaky and the show continued after it, but I definitely held my breath watching the video of her fall before she popped back up and said she was okay. It's understandable that sometimes accidents happen, but I feel like these things should always be sorted out before shows to prevent circumstances like this.
I did in fact see this on Tiktok before I read this article and honestly the clip of it is quite hilarious. Olivia Rodrigo did a great job of just getting up and rolling with it, I’m just glad she at least appeared to be uninjured as she got up and immediately just kept going with the show. I do wonder where the mistake or error was here? It might’ve been some technicians that missed their cue to close or, or perhaps opened the hole up too early. Although I feel like a massive hole in the stage would be something that the stage manager would catch pretty quickly as it is fairly obvious. It might’ve been an issue on Olivia’s part where she walked too far back in her choreography and accidentally fell in. For Olivia’s sake I hope the production team does some troubleshooting to prevent this situation from occurring again throughout her tour.
This video was genuinely all over my feed when it happened - I remember one of my roommates sending it to me because it surprised both of us so much that something like this could happen at a scale like a major pop star’s tour. Of course mistakes (even really bad ones) do happen but this seems like a huge operating error. I think Olivia Rodrigo handled the situation incredibly well especially considering how physically surprising and painful it looks like that was. I do wonder how safety incidents like these are handled and (hopefully) prevented on an operational level. It’s impossible to predict everything but obviously the goal is to prevent things like this from happening. I’m sure the production team had its hands full in the days following this happening. I hope there are no more incidents to this level or scale on the tour in its coming legs.
This is a crazy accident. I’m surprised the article wasn’t more investigative on why the hole was there and whose fault it really was. There are a lot of people who could be to blame for this; maybe the hole wasn’t supposed to be there for the show, maybe someone forgot to tell Rodrigo about the hole, or maybe Rodrigo herself forgot about it. I’m more inclined to believe that it was someone on the production team who forgot to fill this hole, especially given that this show is part of a tour. Moving into and out of new spaces presents challenges, and I’m sure there are always some hiccups – though this is a little more than a hiccup. Regardless, it’s good to hear that she wasn’t hurt and was able to brush it off, apparently without any injuries. Something like this obviously has the potential to become a serious accident.
I saw this video on tiktok maybe 10 different times already, and it is really funny to be completely honest. Though, after falling through the stage she got up right away and sort of just laughed it off, so good for her I guess. I wonder what happened to the stagehands who made that mistake. Do we think they still have their job? I don’t know we shall see. She is currently on her GUTS world tour and this took place in Melbourne, Australia. In two days actually, on October 29th, the filmed version of the world tour is headed to Netflix, featuring one of her performances that was in August in Los Angeles at the Intuit Dome. This tour first started in February of 2024, and this was Olivia Rodrigo’s first tour like this ever. In total, this is an eight month long tour. Hopefully she does not fall through a stage again.
There's been this ongoing trend on TikTok that is called subtle foreshadowing, which is basically just someone getting hurt, but you only show clips of it in the beginning of the video to kind of hook the viewer in, and one night I was scrolling and had seen that Olivia Rodrigo had fallen through the stage in Australia, so something in my head knew it was going to turn into a subtle foreshadowing video. When I went to the Guts tour, it was such a phenomenal show, one of the best concerts I had been to in a while, and she continues to display that every night. However, what I'm confused about is that her falling this far into the tour, literally one of the last show dates, is just weird, like I was kind of just confused as to why there was a big gaping hole in the stage that opened up literally as she walked toward it. I found it funny but nonetheless concerning because that's crazy dangerous!
Unfortunately with the new trend of adding automated holes into the decks of touring stages this unfortunate incident does not shock me. I am very glad this artist is okay and hope that all injury report protocols were followed. With how automation cues work I am confused on how the deck opened up at the wrong time. This incident was 100% on the stage management and tech crew not on Oliva herself. I hope precautions are put in place to make sure incidents like this do not happen again. Although I do not know why there is an automated hole in the stage not having seen the Guts tour more safety measures need to be put in place to make sure incidents like this won't happen again. I am shocked at the young artists ability to recover quickly and make a joke out of something spontaneous because, sometimes there is just a hole in the stage.
