I know that productions have normalized filming in various different locations, especially when it is best to film on site for a scene. However, given the very strong presence of Hollywood in California, I always assumed that the “home base” for each production would be in California. After thinking about it, it makes sense that productions would choose to leave California, especially because of the high prices, and the ease of communicating and working via the internet. Reading this article gave me a better understanding of how the industry works in relation to filming on location. I think Apatow brings up an interesting point when he talks about the influence of algorithms in greenlighting projects, and how creativity is suffering because of this. This isn’t something I was aware of, although I do know about the recent phenomenon of Netflix canceling popular series after one or two seasons, despite the demand for continuing seasons. I think it’s unfortunate that good quality projects are not being greenlit as often anymore, and that budget constraints are holding many productions back.
