CMU faculty weigh-in on the implications of AI for art in faculty dialogues

The Tartan: For ages, art has been a blend of inspiration, imitation, and an artist’s reality, finding form in everything. From the strokes the fiery arms of the sun make over the canvas of the skies at eventide or the emotions that talk through a singer’s voice and an actor’s eyes to the weaving of a silkworm’s rich cocoon, the beauty of art can come from everywhere, its spell unfading across repetitions.

Hearing about this makes me wish I had been in attendance to see these art pieces and the discussion afterwards, as I found this article describing the works and some of the discussion to be refreshing in the world of AI and it’s expanding use, especially in media and art generation. I agree with the article that the interdisciplinary work happening here is fantastic to see (especially at CMU) and I would add that it demonstrates that art remains to be bounded even when generative AI has been a difficult issue to navigate for artists as often there is not proper accreditation or compensation. Yet, seeing how these tools can be leveraged to make great art from their own kinds of creation that is intentional and driven instead of mere imitation or stealing of another's work. Finally, I think that it also demonstrates a rising trend in video and media in theater, film, and television as this design work has expanded drastically with these generative AI tools.
