Entertainment Central Pittsburgh: One of the delights of opera is that most plots are simple. Classic opera tends toward pure melodrama. The hero rescues his love interest and vanquishes the villain. The formula is to be expected as tradition because it can be as comforting as macaroni and cheese or meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

I was fortunate enough last semester to shadow the stage management team at the Pittsburgh Opera downtown for one of their smaller Operas. It’s amazing to me that this Opera with so many different moving pieces and people is able to be rehearsed in their spaces downtown and then moved to the Benedum. I am sure that it is a wonderful experience to watch and thoughtfully curated to showcase the talent of the singers. I have never seen a performance of Tosca before, but now, knowing the background of how this Opera happens in a 24 hour time period on stage, I am intrigued to learn more. It sounds as though it has riveting and thought-provoking action and drama throughout and not only are the leads, some of which are making their Pittsburgh Opera debut, stunning in their work, but the leads are also accompanied by a large chorus behind them. This show must be stunning to see, I’m so glad it’s getting rave reviews while it performs at the Benedum.
