Immediately this article grabbed my attention because of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I watched that movie with my parents last year, and I remember being enthralled by the martial arts scenes, and the way the costumes came alive throughout the action scenes. I was also impressed by the way the sets interacted with the choreography. It was well thought out, coordinated, and shot. I like that in this article, Yip touches on the fact that the costumes for a dance heavy production like The Butterfly Lovers must not mask any of the dancers’ movements, because it shows the different requirements for designing costumes for different mediums.
Finally, one of the things that stuck out to me as I read is how Yip says that the story is modern in its portrayal of gender fluid people. I have never heard of The Butterfly Lovers, but now having read this article and understanding a little more of the production process and the story, I am intrigued and want to know more about it.
